VOLUNTEER WORK DAYS

Volunteer Work Days Update

June 2026
By George Chapman

Grafton Briggs and crew did a great job clearing, cleaning and grading for the new lawn at the bottom of the main path. A new, natural looking berm was created at the edge of the lawn using excess soil from the site. This extra soil will be used in the future to create a path from the end of the Upper Path to the water’s edge. Timing was great for the growing of grass. A big thank you to Bill G for setting up hoses and sprinklers, keeping the area moist during germination and growth.

We had a great work day on Thursday, June 04, with Hila, Keith and Judy Quenzel, and a vacationing gardener joining in. We were able to complete the work in The Dot Sherrerd Memorial Hydrangea Garden that Hila had made such good progress on last season. We are confident that the hydrangeas will rebound quickly and be back in bud and bloom next season. More work on the entrance and pathway in this area will be done soon.

The European Beech trees that Hamilton Tree Company treated for the Beech Tree Leaf Disease are showing promising results. Hamilton will advise us on how to proceed to keep this problem under control.

Carol Suitor will be donating more Suitor Rhododendrons to add to our collection here in the gardens. Bred and developed here on Cape Cod, these plants will add yet another unique collection of plants for our visitors to enjoy.

We would like to freshen up the main entrance by giving all the information boards a fresh coat of paint.

Garden Features

Spohr Gardens provides a breathtaking succession of colorful blooms from early spring through late summer. Specimen trees include magnolias, American hollies, cryptomeria, dawn redwoods, umbrella pines, and beech trees.

There are garden decorations, such as anchors, millstones, and lanterns which are integrated like sculptures among the flowers and trees of the Gardens.
